The U.S. Postal Service required a stamp series that focused on the diversity of historical figures in the United States. I selected six individuals from various time periods throughout history that were impactful in different ways.
I chose three men and three women with backgrounds in areas such as government, exploration, aviation, automotive, activism, and abolitionism.
I chose three men and three women with backgrounds in areas such as government, exploration, aviation, automotive, activism, and abolitionism.
I selected the title of the series, “This Land is Your Land,” to communicate the fact that U.S. history is diverse and colorful. Important figures throughout history came from many different backgrounds. The individuals I selected are meant to represent just how different the people are who made an impact. There were many other highly impactful people throughout history that I was unable to feature because the USPS only required six stamps in the series.
Design Thinking
Each stamp design features a headshot of someone who has made a large impact on the United States throughout history. The background image of each stamp features an image or painting of the individual in the context which they are known for.
When I conducted a “user test” of the design, not everyone was able to recognize these individuals from sight alone, so I added names in the lower-right corner of each stamp.
